For the Archaeologists

Two and a half million years ago,
Australopithicus carefully shopped
for her rocks, chipping lava flakes
into tools to scrape slaughtered flesh
from the bones of the vanquished.
Glad to be vicious on Spaceship Earth.

Our ancestors lived with Kilimanjaro
like we live with TV,
and they knew more about Homo sapiens' dawn
than could be conveniently passed on
in the fossil record
to those who tap in mud
and tread like lost airmen
praying for the pacifists
or the peacekeeping force;
brothers in debris.
